Beware of cheap laser cutters!

Lately, I’ve been seeing more and more offers for hobby laser cutters. Some of them are priced at just a few hundred euros and come with lasers of up to 5 watts. While these devices seem to work, they come with significant risks.

Laser cutters in this power range can be extremely dangerous to the eyes and can cause severe retinal burns in a short amount of time, potentially leading to complete blindness. Animals may have eyes that are more or less sensitive than humans.

Personally, I would never buy such a device. While there are more reputable options available at a higher price point, they still carry risks that can be dangerous for users lacking expertise.

My conclusion regarding cheap laser cutters: Stay away from them! I don’t believe that you or anyone else would want to live with a lifelong eye injury resulting from the careless operation of such a device.

For productive use, there are “affordable” industrial laser cutters that can fit in a smaller workshop. Additionally, you’ll need an exhaust system. Laser Class II machines typically don’t require training, but for Laser Class IV, you’ll need a (trained) laser safety officer. (Applies to Swiss standards).

I understand that some people may not share my view, but in my opinion, laser cutters are not hobby toys. If you are seriously considering getting into laser cutting, I believe it’s essential to seek advice from trained professionals.
